Free AI Overview Checker
Check whether Google shows an AI Overview for any keyword, read what it says, and see every source it cites. No sign-up required.
This checks Google. What about ChatGPT?
AI Overviews are one half of generative search. The other is whether assistants recommend you by name when someone describes a problem you solve. A brand can be cited here constantly and never come up there.
What a Google AI Overview is, and why the citations matter
An AI Overview is the summary Google writes above the ordinary results for some searches, assembled from pages it has indexed and linked to a handful of them as sources. For anyone who publishes, the summary itself matters less than that list of sources.
Being cited puts your brand inside the answer rather than below it. Someone who reads the overview and never scrolls has still seen your name, and the link is there for anyone who wants the detail. Not being cited on a query where an overview appears means the answer gets given without you, whatever your organic position.
That is the gap this AI Overview checker fills. Most free tools tell you whether an overview appeared and stop there. Knowing that one exists is not actionable. Knowing which eight or twelve pages Google quoted tells you exactly who you are competing with for the answer.
Ranking and being cited are not the same thing
The most useful thing this tool surfaces is the mismatch between the two, which is why it reports your organic position alongside the citation result.
Pages ranking outside the top ten get cited in AI Overviews. Pages ranking in the top three often are not. Google is picking passages that answer the specific question cleanly, and that is a different selection than the one producing the ranked list. A page can be the best overall resource on a topic and still be passed over for a summary because the answer is buried three sections down.
The practical read on each combination:
- Ranking and cited. The strongest position available on that query. Protect it.
- Ranking but not cited. Usually a structure problem rather than an authority one. The page has the answer but does not state it plainly enough early enough to be lifted.
- Cited but not ranking well. A strong signal that the content answers the question well. Worth investing in the page, since Google already trusts that passage.
- Neither. Look at the cited sources above and read what they do differently.
How to get cited in AI Overviews
There is no submission process and no setting to switch on. What the cited pages tend to have in common is fairly consistent:
- They answer the question directly and early. A clear answer in the first paragraph under a heading that matches the question is far more liftable than the same answer buried in section four.
- They are specific rather than general. Concrete figures, named steps and real examples survive summarisation. Generic prose does not.
- They are structured predictably. Question-shaped headings, short paragraphs and lists give a model clean units to quote.
- They come from a source with standing on the topic. Depth across a subject makes any one page more likely to be trusted for it.
Run the check on the keywords that matter, look at who is cited, and read their pages against yours. The pattern is usually visible within three or four examples, and it is nearly always about how directly the question is answered rather than how much has been written.
What this tool cannot tell you
Worth being straight about, because AI Overviews are less stable than ordinary rankings and it is easy to over-read a single check.
Overviews vary by location, language, device and over time, and Google experiments continuously. Two people searching the same keyword minutes apart can see different summaries, different sources, or none at all. A result here is one observation from one place at one moment, not a fixed state of the world.
So treat a negative as provisional. A keyword with no overview today may have one next month, and the reverse happens just as often. If a keyword matters commercially, check it periodically rather than concluding from one run. And when something changes between two checks, the honest default is that Google changed something, not that you did.
One thing the tool does not do is guess. If the lookup fails, it says so and says so clearly, rather than reporting no AI Overview. Those are different facts and only one of them is about your keyword.
