The sources ChatGPT cites most

ChatGPT answers with web search enabled, where the model browses and then attributes the sources it used. These are the sources it reaches for, measured across 1,617 real answers, Sep 1, 2026 to Sep 6, 2026.

What this means

Answers ChatGPT returned to a tracked prompt, one per prompt per day. Every percentage on this page is a fraction of this number and of no other engine's.

Mean, over answers that cited anything
What this means

How many links ChatGPT attributes in a typical answer. Engines differ here, which is why a source can hold a larger share of one engine's answers while appearing in fewer of them.

The rest answered without attribution
What this means

The share of answers that carried at least one link. The remainder answered from the model itself with nothing to click, and they stay in the denominator throughout: an answer that cites nobody is still an answer this source did not win.

The domain appearing in the largest share of ChatGPT answers. Ranked on this engine's own rate, not on a blended average across engines.

Share is the percentage of analysed answers that cited the domain at least once, counting each answer once however many times it linked there. A domain enters the table on at least 5 citations, and only once it has been cited for several independent businesses. Cells marked † fall under that on the individual engine and are shown for contrast rather than as a rate.

Questions about AI citation data

What the numbers mean, how they were measured, and how they compare with what else has been published.

What sources does ChatGPT cite most?

Across 1,617 ChatGPT answers measured over the last 6 days, the five most cited domains are microsoft.com, canva.com, apps.apple.com, play.google.com, forbes.com. microsoft.com leads, appearing in 4.2% of ChatGPT answers. The ranking is rebuilt every day.

How many sources does ChatGPT cite per answer?

7.1 on average, across answers that cited anything at all. 99.6% of ChatGPT answers carried at least one link; the rest answered from the model with nothing to click.

Does ChatGPT cite the same sources as other AI engines?

No. microsoft.com appears in 4.2% of ChatGPT answers and <0.1% on the engine that differs from it most. Ranking sources by a blended average across engines hides differences this large, which is why every table here is measured against one engine's own answers.

How is ChatGPT citation share measured?

Share is the percentage of ChatGPT answers that cited a domain at least once. An answer linking to the same source repeatedly counts once, and answers that cited nothing stay in the denominator. Prompts are real commercial questions asked daily, and the full dataset is free to download as JSON or CSV.

How these numbers are measured

Every figure on this page has a denominator you can check. Here is exactly what was counted, and what this dataset is not.

What one measurement is

RankSpot runs its customers’ tracked prompts against each answer engine every day and records the sources each answer cites. One measurement is one answer from one engine on one day: 4,656 of them, Sep 1, 2026 to Sep 6, 2026.

What the percentage means

Share is the proportion of analysed answers that cited a domain at least once. An answer linking to a source four times counts once, so a single verbose citation block cannot inflate a domain’s standing. Answers that cited nothing at all stay in the denominator.

Which domains appear

A domain has to be cited at least 5 times, and cited for several independent businesses rather than only one, before it is published. Subdomains fold into their registrable domain, so mobile and desktop hosts count as one source. App-store listings stay separate because being cited there is a different fact. Google.com itself is left out: Google’s AI surfaces link back into Google as part of how they render an answer, which describes the interface rather than which publishers earn citations. YouTube stays, because it is cited as a source in its own right.

Where the prompts come from

These are real commercial prompts written by real businesses tracking their own visibility, not synthetic queries invented to fill a leaderboard. That is the strength of the dataset and also its shape: it skews toward buying-intent questions in the categories RankSpot customers sell into, across many businesses and several languages. It is not a random sample of everything people ask.

How often it updates

Every engine is queried daily and the whole index is rebuilt from scratch each day, so the tables reflect the most recent measurement rather than a snapshot taken once and left. Daily figures on a single engine move on small numbers, so the charts switch to a seven-day rate once there is enough history to compute one honestly.
