What this xml sitemap validator checks

Most tools stop at whether the XML parses. That is the easy half. The useful half is whether the URLs inside are any good.

Whether it is valid XML at all

The root element, the structure, and the exact reason it will not parse. A common failure is a server returning an HTML error page with a 200 status, which we name explicitly.

How many URLs it lists

The total across the sitemap, or across its children when you point us at a sitemap index. Flagged if it exceeds the 50,000 URL limit.

Whether those URLs actually work

We request a sample of the URLs and report the status code for each, so 404s and server errors sitting in your sitemap surface immediately.

URLs blocked by your own robots.txt

The contradiction nobody checks for: a URL submitted for crawling that robots.txt disallows. We evaluate real robots rules, including longest-match precedence, and name the rule responsible.

lastmod coverage and validity

How many URLs declare a last modified date, the oldest and newest, and any dates that are not valid W3C datetimes and will be ignored.

Sitemap index structure

For an index file, each child sitemap with its status and URL count, so you can see which part of a split sitemap is failing.

Common sitemap errors, and how to fix them

A sitemap rarely fails loudly. It usually keeps working while quietly pointing at the wrong things.

  1. 1Listing URLs that redirect. A sitemap should name final destinations. Entries that redirect make crawlers take an extra hop to reach a page you could have pointed at directly, and it usually means the sitemap was generated before a URL structure change.
  2. 2Submitting URLs blocked by robots.txt. The most self-defeating sitemap error, and the one this tool exists to catch. You are asking search engines to crawl pages you have also told them not to crawl. The block wins, and the sitemap entry is wasted.
  3. 3Leaving 404s in the sitemap. Dead URLs waste crawl budget and signal that the sitemap is not maintained. This happens most often when pages are deleted through a CMS that does not regenerate the sitemap.
  4. 4An HTML page served where XML should be. Some servers answer an unknown path with a styled 404 page and a 200 status. The sitemap looks like it exists and contains nothing usable. We report this specifically rather than as a generic parse failure.
  5. 5Faking lastmod on every URL. Setting lastmod to today across the whole site on every rebuild destroys the signal's value. Search engines learn to ignore it, and you lose a cheap way to say which pages genuinely changed.
  6. 6Never declaring the sitemap anywhere. A sitemap nothing points at is hard to find. Add a Sitemap line to robots.txt and submit it in Search Console, which costs nothing and makes discovery reliable.

Open the sitemap URL in a browser and you will see the raw XML, a list of <url> blocks each containing a <loc>. Manually you can confirm it loads and spot obvious problems, but you cannot practically confirm that hundreds of listed URLs still resolve, or cross-check them against robots.txt. That is the part worth automating.
How to check if XML is valid?
For a sitemap specifically, the checker above reports the parse result and the reason for any failure. Valid sitemap XML needs a single urlset or sitemapindex root in the sitemaps.org namespace, well-formed nested elements, UTF-8 encoding, and entity-escaped URLs, so an ampersand inside a loc must be written as &amp;.
