No account needed, checked against Google's rules

How the Google business description generator works

Three steps, and the last one is the part other generators skip:

Describe the business

Name, category and what you actually offer. Only what you enter gets used, so no invented awards, credentials or years in business.

Generate the description

One description under Google's 750 character limit, written so the first sentence carries the weight.

Check it before you paste

Every result is run against Google's content rules, so you find out here rather than when your profile edit gets rejected.

Google's rules for the description field

A description that breaks these either fails to save or gets held for review. Every result above is checked against all six.

RuleWhat Google doesWhat this tool does

What actually makes the description work

The rules tell you what not to do. These are the decisions that decide whether anyone reads past the first line.

The first sentence is most of the description

Your profile truncates after roughly 250 characters and most people never tap to expand. If the first sentence does not say what you do and who you do it for, the rest of it is not being read.

Write for a customer, not for Google

The description is not a ranking factor in any direct sense. Google has been consistent that it does not use it to rank the profile, so packing it with keywords costs you the reader and gains you nothing.

Mention the area once, naturally

A place name in a sentence a human would actually say is fine. Listing six surrounding suburbs is the classic local spam pattern, and it reads exactly as badly as it sounds.

Leave the offers out

Discounts and calls to action are against the guidelines here, and they date badly in a field nobody remembers to update. Google Posts exist for anything time-limited.

Where the description sits in local SEO

Worth being straight about this, because it is the most common misunderstanding about the field: the description does not move you up the map pack.

Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. The profile description is not part of that calculation, and Google has said so consistently. Keyword stuffing it, or listing every surrounding town, costs you a reader and gains you nothing at all.

What the description does is convert. Someone has already found you in the map pack, they are deciding between you and two others, and this is one of the few pieces of writing on the profile that is yours rather than a review or a photo. That is a job worth doing well, and it is a different job from ranking.

The things that do move local rankings:

  1. 1Category accuracy. The primary category does more than any other single field, and most businesses pick one that is close rather than correct.
  2. 2Completeness. Hours, services, products, attributes and recent photos. Profiles that are filled in outrank profiles that are not.
  3. 3Reviews, in volume and recency rather than just average score.
  4. 4Consistent name, address and phone details wherever your business appears elsewhere.
  5. 5Proximity, which you cannot change, and which explains more variation in local results than anything you can.

To see where you currently stand across a map rather than from your own desk, our local rank checker runs a grid of searches around a location, which is the only honest way to read local rankings given how much proximity affects them.

Other descriptions, other tools

"Description generator" covers several unrelated jobs, and a tool built for one does the others badly.

This page writes the description on your Google Business Profile, under Google's rules and its 750 character cap. If you are writing something else:

  1. 1For listings in an online shop, the product description generator writes short, medium and long versions from a product's features.
  2. 2For the snippet that appears under your page title in search results, the meta description generator writes to the 155 character limit that applies there.
  3. 3For alt text on images, the alt text generator handles it, and that is a genuinely different job again.

The product description generator and the meta description generator are both free and need no account either.

Google My Business description FAQ

How do I write a Google business description?
Say what the business does, who it serves and where, in the first sentence, then use the remaining space for the services people actually search for. Keep it under 750 characters, leave out links, phone numbers and offers, and write it for a person deciding whether to walk in. The generator above handles the structure and checks the rules, but the details it works from have to be yours.
How do I update my Google business description?
Sign in to your Google Business Profile, either from the profile itself when you search for your business or through the Business Profile manager, then open Edit profile, go to the About tab and edit the description field. Changes usually go live within a few minutes, though edits can occasionally be held for review, which is why it is worth checking the content rules before you paste rather than after.
Does the Google business description affect ranking?
Not directly. Google has been consistent that the description is not used to rank your Business Profile, and local ranking is driven mainly by relevance, distance and prominence. What the description does affect is whether someone who has already found you decides to contact you. Treat it as conversion copy rather than as an SEO field, and do not stuff it with keywords or place names.
How long can a Google business description be?
750 characters, and the field will not save beyond that. The more useful number is the one Google does not publish: roughly the first 250 characters show before a viewer has to tap to see the rest. The tool above shows both, so you can see where your description gets cut off on a phone.
What is a business description example?
For a dental practice: "Harbour Lane Dental looks after families across Bristol, from routine check-ups to emergency appointments. Our team sees nervous patients regularly and takes the time to explain what is happening before anything starts. We offer whitening, hygiene visits and children's dentistry, with evening slots on weekdays." It opens with what and who, keeps the services concrete, and contains no links, prices or offers.
What is a Google Business Profile example?
A complete profile has the category set accurately, real opening hours, photos taken recently, services or products listed individually, and a description that reads like a person wrote it. The description is the part most businesses either skip or fill with keywords. Look at the top three results in the map pack for your category and area: what they have in common is usually completeness rather than clever copy.
How do I describe my business in one sentence?
Name what you do, who you do it for, and where, then stop. "We are a family-run bakery serving south Leeds with sourdough, celebration cakes and coffee." The temptation is to add why you are excellent, which is the part readers discount automatically. Since your profile truncates after about 250 characters, this one sentence is doing most of the work anyway.
Is Google My Business free?
Yes. Creating and managing a Business Profile costs nothing, including the description, photos, posts and messaging. Google renamed the product from Google My Business to Google Business Profile in 2021, but the free tier is the same thing. Anyone charging a monthly fee to manage your profile is selling their time, not access to Google.
Is there a difference between Google My Business and Google Business Profile?
They are the same product under two names. Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile in 2021 and retired the separate app, moving management into Search and Maps directly. Most people still say Google My Business, which is why this page uses both names, and the description field works identically either way.
What is the best AI description generator?
It depends what you are describing, and the tools are not interchangeable. This page writes Google Business Profile descriptions and checks them against Google's rules. For an online shop's product listings use our product description generator, and for the snippet under your page title in search results use the meta description generator. A tool built for one does the others badly.
How to create an AI description?
Give the tool the specifics rather than asking it to be creative. Business name, category, location and the services you actually offer produce a usable description; vague inputs produce vague output, and no amount of regenerating fixes that. Then read what comes back and add the one detail only you would know, because that is the sentence that makes it yours rather than generic.
Do you need an LLC to have a Google business profile?
No. Google requires that the business makes in-person contact with customers during its stated hours, not that it has any particular legal structure. Sole traders, partnerships and unregistered side businesses can all have profiles. What Google does verify is that the business exists at the location or service area you claim, usually by postcard, phone or video.
